This expat housing is like living in a small self-contained holiday village or prison, depending on your point of view. The better ones have multiple pools, restaurants, markets, and so on. Within the compounds the dress is Western, some going as far as banning any form of Saudi dress and certainly Saudis are not allowed on at all socially! Generally accommodation on Western compounds in KSA is of reasonable quality and quite spacious.
Compound living is quite expensive compared to living off compound Anywhere from , to , SAR for a 3 bed villa or even more but most westerners choose this way of life due to freedom and security as well as the facilities. I would not recommend living off-compound if you have a wife and children; at least within the compound they have relative freedom.
Most expats have their accommodation costs paid directly by their employer who will also normally arrange housing. However, there is a shortage of good housing in the better compounds in the main cities, so it may take some time to get somewhere suitable for yourself and your family. Personally, I lived in one of the medium sized compounds in Riyadh, known as Seder Compound which was at the time expanding its number of villas considerably to add many more guests.
I also visited many other expat compounds in Riyadh and also Jeddah and Al-Khobar. When I moved to Jeddah however, I elected to live off compound and experience more about the local life here.

I was in Cartagena and the place to go was Plaza Santo Domingo. Expensive and just mediocre quality but the place to be seen. The first time I asked a girl out and we went there, she ordered the most expensive lobster, shrimp and and several expensive cocktials. She barely ate anything and packed it all up to take home to mama. I was smokin angry. I felt totally abused.
Several more dates like that and the same results. I was starting to hate Colombian women. Then one day it dawned on me, why would I take a girl to an expensive resturant and then be angry with her at ordering somthing expensive. The women I was asking out had no idea how money worked, they never had any and were un able to make any kind of value vs cost decision.
Meat, rice and beans is what they are accustomed to and what they know and like. An expensive piece of perfectly prepared rib eye broiled to perfection will get tossed in the trash by most Colombian women.

Bill Barnett What exactly is this Chindia? Though room rate growth was not there, volume ruled the day. Chinese numbers sunk, airlift declined and online chatter in China denounced not only Phuket but cast a broader shadow on Brand Thailand. The traditional concept that the mojo of Thai teflon would result in only a slight momentary blip turned out to be erroneous.
While the fallout from the incident has lessened, there remains a strongly demonstrated downward shift in Mainland Chinese tourists to both Phuket and Thailand. What is clear is that there can be no separation in negative sentiment between Phuket and the larger Thai brand. Another negative has been the depreciation of the Mainland Chinese currency, the yuan.
While most of the damage has been done over the past 4 years, this year has seen further erosion, as the Thai baht has remained strong. Hoteliers staring into the looking glass of the fast approaching are increasingly being fixated by the magnetic attraction of Chindia. What exactly is this Chindia? Geography has a lot to do with accidental tourism.
